Random Liberals

We are random liberals (who knew?). Collectively, we make up the greatest blog in the history of ourselves. We will blog about anything that suits us; mostly politics, with a little bit of religion and randomness to make the blog exciting.

Random Convention Notes

So. When I first set out to write this, I was going to present a highlight from all three days so far, then add hopefully biting commentary...but I can't remember any of Monday. Wait...now it's coming back to me. McCain and Giuliani. I didn't really pay attention to either of their speeches. Truth be told, I haven't paid attention to any of them. I can't really watch for more than three or four minutes without retching. But I especially didn't pay attention to the speeches on Monday. I just had a hard time putting up with lies being told by a man I greatly respect otherwise (McCain), and by a man who really has no business being so well liked (Giuliani).

Tuesday, though, Arnold Scharzenegger delivered the (unintentionally) funniest line I have ever heard. Governor Schwarzenegger was attempting to tell us how we know we're a Republican when he said, "If you believe that government should be accountable to the people, not the people to the government...then you are a Republican!" This from the convention that is re-nominating a president who has brought us the most corrupt, most secretive, least accountable government since the Nixon administration, all while holding United States citizens without redress.

Yesterday, Senator Zell Miller of Georgia, who claims he is a Democrat (and who's hand I shook when I was all of three years old) gave the keynote address at the Republican Convention. There's not much more I can add to the beating that Zell was given on CNN and MSNBC last night after the speech, but I thought it would be fun to use him to turn a Republican meme on its head. First is an excerpt from a speech made in 2001. Second is last night's speech.

Flip:
My job tonight is an easy one: to present to you one of this nation's authentic heroes, one of this party's best-known and greatest leaders – and a good friend.

He was once a lieutenant governor – but he didn't stay in that office 16 years, like someone else I know. It just took two years before the people of Massachusetts moved him into the United States Senate in 1984.

In his 16 years in the Senate, John Kerry has fought against government waste and worked hard to bring some accountability to Washington.

Early in his Senate career in 1986, John signed on to the Gramm-Rudman-Hollings Deficit Reduction Bill, and he fought for balanced budgets before it was considered politically correct for Democrats to do so.

John has worked to strengthen our military, reform public education, boost the economy and protect the environment. Business Week magazine named him one of the top pro-technology legislators and made him a member of its "Digital Dozen."

John was re-elected in 1990 and again in 1996 – when he defeated popular Republican Governor William Weld in the most closely watched Senate race in the country.

John is a graduate of Yale University and was a gunboat officer in the Navy. He received a Silver Star, Bronze Star and three awards of the Purple Heart for combat duty in Vietnam. He later co-founded the Vietnam Veterans of America.

Flop:
And, no pair has been more wrong, more loudly, more often than the two Senators from Massachusetts, Ted Kennedy and John Kerry.

Together, Kennedy/Kerry have opposed the very weapons system that won the Cold War and that is now winning the War on Terror.

Listing all the weapon systems that Senator Kerry tried his best to shut down sounds like an auctioneer selling off our national security but Americans need to know the facts.

The B-1 bomber, that Senator Kerry opposed, dropped 40% of the bombs in the first six months of Operation Enduring Freedom.

The B-2 bomber, that Senator Kerry opposed, delivered air strikes against the Taliban in Afghanistan and Hussein's command post in Iraq.

The F-14A Tomcats, that Senator Kerry opposed, shot down Khadifi's Libyan MIGs over the Gulf of Sidra. The modernized F-14D, that Senator Kerry opposed, delivered missile strikes against Tora Bora.

The Apache helicopter, that Senator Kerry opposed, took out those Republican Guard tanks in Kuwait in the Gulf War. The F-15 Eagles, that Senator Kerry opposed, flew cover over our Nation's Capital and this very city after 9/11.

I could go on and on and on: Against the Patriot Missile that shot down Saddam Hussein's scud missiles over Israel, Against the Aegis air-defense cruiser, Against the Strategic Defense Initiative, Against the Trident missile, against, against, against.

This is the man who wants to be the Commander in Chief of our U.S. Armed Forces?

U.S. forces armed with what? Spitballs? (link)

Folks, above is incontrovertible evidence that Zell Miller is, indeed, a flip-flopping Democrat. That's right, flip-flopping Democrats do exist. I used to believe that they were just a bogeyman invented by the Bush campaign, but I have been proven wrong. My apologies to President Bush for doubting him.
